RFID
Optidev has delivered many RFID projects and has developed a wealth of real-life expertise about the technology. The RFID technology is used in many different areas, including manufacturing, retail, and warehousing, and it continuously is brought into new, creative applications.
RFID Tags
An RFID tag is a small circuit board with an antenna and electronics. When the tag is within reach of an antenna, it is charged and sends data in return. There are several different RFID standards, and they operate on different frequencies.
The reading distance varies, but it is typically between two and four meters. One of the main differences between RFID tags and bar codes is that RFID tags have a memory and can store more information than bar codes can. Unlike bar codes, RFID tags can be read from a distance and without the reader seeing the tag. UHF Class 1 Gen 2 UHF tags (passive tags), which is the most common RFID technology used by Optidev, can store between 96 and 256 bytes.
RFID Portals for Fixed Installations
Optidev offers RFID portals for fixed installation on production lines or doorframes. The solution consists of RFID antennas, electronics for control, and an industrial computer. This solution enables automated registration of tagged items that move between the readers.
Mobile Computers with RFID Capability
Optidev offers several mobile computers with RFID capability. They allow for speedy and reliable registration of RFID tags as well as scanning of bar codes. Individually tagged items inside large packages can be read without the reader seeing the tag. Likewise, RFID tags enable reading of serial numbers on machine parts that are covered in oil and dirt, a situation that makes bar-code scanning difficult.
